Transport of jundiá Rhamdia quelen juveniles at different loading densities: water quality and blood parameters Neotropical Ichthyology
Carneiro,Paulo César Falanghe; Kaiseler,Pedro Henriques da Silva; Swarofsky,Elaine de Azambuja Correia; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
Fish transportation is a common practice on fish farms and is considered to be a stressor that could negatively affect fish health. The objective of this study was to evaluate several physiological responses of stress in jundiá caused by transport at different loading densities. Jundiá juveniles were placed in plastic bags on a mechanical transport simulator for four hours at four different loading densities (75, 150, 250 and 350 g L-1) and then transferred to sixteen 80-L plastic boxes for 96 hours after transport. Water samples were collected before and after transport to measure dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH and ammonia levels. Blood samples were taken at departure and arrival, as well as at 24 and 96 hours after transport to monitor cortisol,...

Transport of Pirarucu Arapaima gigas juveniles in plastic bag Acta Amazonica
Gomes,Levy de Carvalho; Roubach,Rodrigo; Cavero,Bruno Adan Sagratzki; Pereira-Filho,Manoel; Urbinati,Elisabeth Criscuolo.
This study examined the stress response of pirarucu juveniles in a closed system transport. Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) is a native Amazonian fish species from the Osteoglossidae family and an obligated air breather. A short duration transport trial (6h) was undertaken comparing closed polyethylene bags filled with atmospheric air (Air group) and bags filled with pure oxygen (Oxi group). Dissolved oxygen was the only water parameter that presented a difference between fish groups, and was saturated in the oxi group as expected. There was no mortality in either group after transport. Fish feeding was observed 36 h after transport for all fish, and normal feeding consumption was observed at 72 h. In both groups physiological responses were similar. Cortisol...

As variáveis físico-químicas da água: condutividade e amônia total apresentaram maiores valores quanto maior a densidade (p < 0,05), enquanto no oxigênio dissolvido ocorreu o inverso. A glicemia observada na chegada estava elevada, reduzindo-se significativamente 96h...

Vascular adaptive responses to physical exercise and to stress are affected differently by nandrolone administration BJMBR
Bruder-Nascimento,T.; Cordellini,S..
Androgenic anabolic steroid, physical exercise and stress induce cardiovascular adaptations including increased endothelial function. The present study investigated the effects of these conditions alone and in combination on the vascular responses of male Wistar rats. Exercise was started at 8 weeks of life (60-min swimming sessions 5 days per week for 8 weeks, while carrying a 5% body-weight load). One group received nandrolone (5 mg/kg, twice per week for 8 weeks, im). Acute immobilization stress (2 h) was induced immediately before the experimental protocol. Curves for noradrenaline were obtained for thoracic aorta, with and without endothelium from sedentary and trained rats, submitted or not to stress, treated or not with nandrolone. None of the...

Vitamins E and C Supplementation in Japanese Quail: Effects on Growth Performance and Biochemical and Haematological Parameters Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Khazaei,R; Requena,F; Seidavi,A; Martínez,AL.
ABSTRACT The effects of vitamins E and C supplementation on growth performance and biochemical and haematological parameters of Japanese quail were studied. A total of 360 one-day-old Japanese female quails were randomly allocated to nine dietary treatment groups (10 birds per replicate and 4 replicates per treatment), including a control (basal diet) and the basal diet supplemented with: 250 or 500 mg/kg of vitamin C, 250 or 500 mg/kg of vitamin E, 250 mg/kg of both vitamins E and C, 250 and 500 mg/kg of vitamins E and C, 500 and 250 mg/kg of vitamins E and C, and 500 mg/kg of both vitamins E and C. Vitamin supplementation improved productive parameters and raised the blood plasma levels of protein, thyroid-stimulating hormone, calcium and phosphorus,...

Welfare in captivity - a challenge to be overcome MV&Z
Pizzutto, Cristiane Schilbach; Scarpelli, Karime Cury; Rossi, Alexandre Pongracz; Chiozzotto, Evelyn Nestori; Leschonski, Claudia.
To provide and to measure welfare of animals in captivity is a great challenge for professionals in this fi eld. Having to adapt to a diversity of stressor stimuli may bring with it important biological expenses for the clinical, physiological and behavioral aspects of these animals. Environmental enrichment is an important tool in the search for species-typical behaviors, better quality of life and the desirable welfare.
